7 easy DIY home remedies for oily skin!

It is almost summertime. If only we could step outside, I would have done a wardrobe makeover and worn my summer dresses, t-shirts and shorts, skirts and what not to beat the heat. We would have been having an ice cream with all our meals to beat the heat. Hogging on mangoes and mango dishes at our favorite joints. Visiting malls and movie theaters cus it would be way too hot to roam outside. Some of us would have even opted to get a summer makeover and got a short hairstyle done. But alas, all we have to do is wait.

I’ve been discussing and writing about skin problems and how to deal with them over the last couple of blogs. So lets discuss another one today.

What is one of the worst skin issues we face during summers? The ones with oily skin will understand the most. Yes, heat and humidity adds up to oily skin making it much worse to deal with. The constant need to retouch our makeup, wash our face, use tissues to wipe our faces, and keep our face ‘non-oily’. But it is natural, we all have our own skin type. Having an oily skin type just means you have to take better care of it.

And I’ve got 7 simple remedies to help you deal with oily skin using your home kitchen ingredients!

  1. Oatmeal face mask:

Oatmeal helps calm inflamed skin and absorbs excess oil, apart from exfoliating dead skin. When using oatmeal in face masks, ground it properly beforehand.

You can use oatmeal with various different ingredients such as yogurt, honey or even mashed fruits such as banana, apple or papaya.

Ingredients and what to do:

  1. ½ cup ground oats

  2. 1 tablespoon honey

Combine ground oats with hot water to form a paste. Add 1 tablespoon honey and stir the mixture. Massage the combined mixture on your face for about 3 minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

If you have time, you can let it be on your face for 15 minutes and then rinse it off, for better results.

  1. Egg Whites and Lemon

Egg whites and lemons are a folk remedy for oily skin. Both ingredients are believed to tighten pores. The acid in lemons and other citrus fruits help to absorb oil.

According to a 2008 study, lemons also have antibacterial abilities. However, this remedy is not a good choice for people with any kind of egg allergies.

Ingredients and what to do:

  1. 1 egg white

  2. 1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice

Combine the egg white and lemon juice and mix. Apply the mixture to your face and leave it on till the mask dries off.

Wash it off gently with warm water and pat dry.

  1. Almonds face mask:

Ground almonds not only work to exfoliate your skin, but they also help sop up excess oils and impurities.

Ingredients and what to do:

  1. 3 teaspoons finely grinded almonds

  2. 2 teaspoons raw honey

Mix the almonds and honey together and apply the mixture on your face gently in circular motions. Wash off in a couple of minutes with warm water.

You can also make an almond face mask by grinding the almonds into a paste before adding the honey. Leave the mask on for 10–15 minutes. Rinse with warm water, and pat dry. Do not use if you have a nut allergy

  1. Fuller’s Earth Face Mask

Fuller’s earth – also known as Multani Mitti is derived from clay and is widely used for brightening, lightening, and treating marks and spots. The absorbent properties of fuller’s earth help in oil reduction.

Ingredients and what to do:

  1. 2 tablespoons Fuller’s Earth (Multani Mitti)

  2. Water

Make a paste by mixing Fuller’s Earth with a little water. Apply the paste to your face and allow it to dry for 15 minutes. Wash your face with normal temperature water and pat dry.

  1. Turmeric and Sandalwood Mask

A turmeric-based face mask with orange juice is beneficial for oily skin. The high vitamin C content of citrus fruits such as oranges, helps in brightening and rejuvenating the skin as well as treating acne.

Ingredients and what to do:

  1. 2 tablespoon Turmeric Powder

  2. 2 tablespoon Sandalwood Powder

  3. 2-3 tablespoon Orange juice

Mix the ingredients to make a smooth paste. Apply the mask evenly on your face and let it stay till it completely dries off. Once dried completely, rinse off with water.

  1. Oatmeal and Egg white Mask

Oatmeal is a natural moisturizer that aids in reducing skin oiliness. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can prevent acne formation. The vitamin A in the egg white can help in unclogging pores and removing oil as the mask penetrates the skin.

Ingredients and what to do:

  1. 1 egg

  2. 1/4th cup ground oatmeal

Break open an egg and separate the egg white from the yolk. Beat the egg whites using a whisk and add ground oatmeal. Mix them well.

Spread the mixture on your face and let it dry for 15 minutes. Wash your face with warm water.

  1. Natural Oil Control Scrub: Coffee Grounds and Honey Scrub

Coffee is rich in antioxidants and stimulates elastin and collagen synthesis, thus providing firmness to the skin. Honey moisturizes the skin and gets rid of excess oil. It can also help in preventing wrinkles and clearing pores. Honey has antibacterial properties and aids in the prevention of acne.

Ingredients and what to do:

  1. Honey

  2. Coffee Grounds

Form a thick paste using equal portions of honey and used coffee grounds. Gently massage the paste on your face in circular motions, like a scrub. Rinse your face with warm water.
